Psychology Reflective Essay After having various lessons, I would like to have a deeper evaluation of the chapter â€Å"Behavior in Social and Cultural Context† especially the concept of attributions . It is known that there are two types of attributions which are internal attributions and external attributions that we generally use to explain our own or other’s behaviors. Internal factors concern a person’s traits while external factors concern the external environment. In addition, I am actually shocked by the fact that there is a fundamental attribution error when we are explaining others’ behaviors. There is a real-life example that I would like to share. Last Monday, I was stuck in a traffic jam for half an hour on Nathan Road. I had a lesson at 8:30 am in Core A and I reached the pedestrian bridge at 8:25 am, so I was rushing to the classroom. At that moment, a scene annoyed me most and stopped my way to school. A boy who was around six years old was too energetic. He dashed and rushed around on the footbridge that disturbed others’ way. He also guffawed and touched or played with anything and everything he saw. Suddenly, he paced around and glared at his mum. Don’t walk like a stupid pig! Do you know how to walk? I have been waiting for you for so long! †He shouted at his mum. At that moment, I was very angry and strongly believed that the boy was so naughty and disrespectful that he showed his emotions with no restraint and did whatever he likes without regard for consequences. Based on the above case, the correspondence bias leads me to explain the boy’s behavior by ignoring the influence of situation on behavior. For example, actually he is a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, so he cannot be patient and always dash around. However, we tend to emphasize the dispositional attribution that the boy is so naughty and disrespectful. Apparently, we tend to overestimate internal factors and underestimate external factors when explaining others’ behavior. After understanding the concept of fundamental attribution error, I have an enquiry related to it. Is there an error too when we explain our own behaviors? In order to find out the answer of it, I do some researches on it. Afterwards, I found out that the concept of actor-observer bias which is proposed by E. E. Jones and R. E. Nisbett in 1971 gives a clearer picture on the error of explaining our own and others’ behaviors. It states that we as an actor are more likely to attribute our own actions to the particular situation than to a generalization about our personality while the reverse asymmetry held for people being an observer and explaining others’ behaviors. Nevertheless, I have doubts about both the fundamental attribution error and the actor-observer bias. In my opinion, I think that both of the ideas only firmly established when describing negative events. For instance, on the one hand, as an actor, when we get bad result on an exam, we usually attribute the reason to the difficult exam (situational). On the other hand, as an observer, when our friends get bad academic result, we usually attribute the reason to his or her lazy character (dispositional). If the event is positive, the reverse error occurs. With the same example but with the condition that both we and our friends get high marks in the exam, we will attribute the reason to hard-working (dispositional) and easy exam (situational) to explain behaviors respectively. Malle (2006) agrees that a reverse asymmetry held for positive events after conducting a mental-analysis. He states that the discrepancy may indicate a self-serving pattern in attribution that we attribute success to internal factors and failure to external factors. Therefore, I believe that we are explaining others’ by using both the self-serving bias and fundamental attribution error. Overall, the lessons build up my foundation for the psychological concepts and theories and we need to explore the psychological world by ourselves in order to find out more details, conflicts about and relationships between different ideas. For instance, in order to finish this reflective journal, I used Google scholar to search about the actor-observer bias and the criticisms about it that I did not learn on the book and in lessons. By experiencing the searching process, I have deeper understanding on it and it strongly impresses on my memory. The process also enhances my analysis skill, to determine which sources are useful and which sources are not related to my topic. Being the harbinger of various life-threatening diseases, both are said to be the most dangerous ingredients of the modern diet. Many health conscious people have become so scared of fat and sugar that food manufacturers today slap the magic words Nonfat and Sugar free on their labels to ensure sales. Despite the slightly higher pricing, these fat and sugar free alternatives have evolved to become the healthier choices compared to their regular counterparts. But to set the records straight once and for all are sugar and fat both evil? Should we really keep ourselves away from them? If yes, then which one must be avoided even more? As a Matter of Fat Filipinos know that eating fatty food can lead to cardiovascular diseases, and yet we love lechon, chicharon, and all the oily goodness of other Pinoy dishes like crispy pata and sizzling sisig. Although it is true that fat content of most Pinoy dishes are of the bad kind, you should understand that not all fats are created the same. Fat isnt actually always bad. Its part of a healthy diet, providing you the essential fatty acids and energy for your daily activities. We need fat to aid in our digestion and excretion of wastes. It also keeps our hair and skin supple and healthy. Fat also helps you absorb fat-soluble vitamins like Vitamins A, D and E. There are four types of fat: monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, saturated and trans fats. The fats that have been reported to cause cardiovascular problems such as heart disease and hypertension are saturated fats and trans fats. Saturated fats can be found in animal fats, coconut oils, dairy products, and palm oils. Trans fats, on the other hand, are artificially developed fats manufactured to prolong shelf life of packed food like cookies, crackers, pastries and chips. These two types have given fat its evil reputation. But there are two other types of fat that actually contribute to good health. Polyunsaturated fats are found in common vegetable oils like soybean oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, walnuts and fish. Monounsaturated fats are found in olive oil, canola oil, avocados, almonds, peanuts cashews, and pecans. Both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are two of the most misunderstood components of food today according to the International Food Information Councils 2008 study, 43% of Americans think that polyunsaturated fats are not heatlhy, while 38% of them feel the same way about monounsaturated fats. Whats the reason behind the bad reputation of fat? Many believe that our general perception of fat today is a product of several years of misleading and confusing information. Some nutritionists think that we should get more than 35% of our daily caloric intake from mono and polyunsaturated fats. According to nutrition consultant Heather Fleming, we should get two servings of the good types of fat per meal. Fleming recognizes the importance of healthy fats in reenergizing our bodys cells. New studies are also surfacing to debunk our previous misconceptions about saturated fat. According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, there is actually no significant evidence that links saturated fat with increased risk of heart disease, contrary to popular belief. Both conventional and holistic medicines are now considering meat and other sources of saturated fats to be actually good for our health. This means, we do not need to take in more sugar anymore. There is no extra benefit in adding a teaspoonful of it on our cup of coffee except for making our drink taste sweeter. So what happens to the extra sugar that we take in from the desserts and beverages that we enjoy on a daily basis? Just like any other turbo charged machine, our bodys natural hormonal responses go to hyper drive when we have too much of it. High sugar intake makes us produce more of the hormone insulin. Insulin manages our sugar levels and stores excess of it into fat for future consumption. The more sugar you bring in, the more insulin is released and the more fat is stored. So dont ever wonder why you keep packing on pounds if youre a full fledged sweet tooth. Excess sugar in your diet also results to Type II diabetes, iron and magnesium deficiencies, sleeplessness, digestive problems, arthritis, obesity and other debilitating health conditions. Whats even more dangerous about consuming sugar is that, unlike fat, there is currently no upper limit established for its intake. According to the 2002 review by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academies of Science Institute of Medicine review of scientific literature, there was no adverse health effects related to sugar intake. Until today, nutrition labels are still not required to list an upper limit for daily sugar intake. Only those of total fat, saturated fat, sodium and cholesterol are required to be listed, based on standard 2000 and 2500 calorie diet per day. Until sugar intake limits are set, the rise in incidences of Type II diabetes, obesity and other sugar-related disorders can be expected to rise. Fat versus Sugar Now, after all that has been said about fat and sugar, do you know which one is more evil? Which one does more harm than good to our body? If you arent really convinced yet, heres a summary of why it is so: We already get the sugar we need from carbohydrates. Any additional sugar we take in will only cause nasty side effects on our health. Fat, on the other hand, is needed by the body to function well. People who love eating sugar-laden processed food and drinks tend to consume more calories than those who dont. This is because sugar acts like drug, it makes one want to crave more while he/she is getting it. This causes a person to consume lots of calories, more than what is required everyday. Sugary foods bring the body under constant stress, according to nutrition consultant Heather Fleming, subjecting it into sudden surges of energy. These surges, also known as the sugar rush, are followed by episodes of low energy. Added sugar provides empty calories meaning there are no additional nutrients gained. Refined sugar is not a natural form of food, just like trans fats. Our body is not meant to break down artificial substances. This alone indicates that adding artificial sugar on food is not part of a healthy diet. Its a kind of junk food. Eat Fat, Avoid Sugar So what should you do to stay healthy? Heed the warning of experts steer away from adding refined sugar on your food as much as possible! You may not notice its detrimental effects yet, but you will in the long run. Eat balanced meals according to the Food Pyramid and include hefty servings of mono and polyunsaturated fat sources like nuts, avocados, and fish. Include animal meat as part of your meal, but of course, watch your servings. Anything taken in moderation is okay, but if you eat too much of even the good stuff, youll just increase your calorie intake and gain weight eventually. Stock your kitchen shelves with fresh fruits and preservative-free snacks to keep you from craving trans fatty food. As mentioned earlier, many nonfat or fat free products that are supposedly healthier usually compensate lost taste with sugar so make sure you avoid them as well. Refrain from drinking soda as this comes with several servings of sugar in every cup. If you love drinking soda and cant do away with it, at least choose a sugar free variant. However, be warned that sugar substitutes like aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame potassium, and sucralose are also artificially manufactured substances just like refined sugar itself so use them sparingly. Poor Parenting can cause poorly behaved children 'Where The Wild Things Are' was first published in 1963 and is the first part of a trilogy of award - winning books by American author and illustrator Maurice Sendak. 'Where The Wild Things Are' is haunting and imaginative and describes how a young child, called Max, creates a fictitious fantasy world in order to deal with the terrifying reality of anger. Poor parenting is a lack of parenting techniques and skills in relation to the responsibilities and obligations, which need to be fulfilled in order to accomplish prominent problems within the family relationship. Poor parenting is most likely to come from an absence of cooperation from both child and parent, satisfying both needs and wants so that they both reach common ground. Depending on the age of the child, a lack of parenting techniques and skills affects a child differently psychologically, mentally, physically, socially and emotionally. However, it is manipulated by the events happening outside the home environment, which can include a divorce or war. The role of the parent in a child's life is very influential and possible outcomes of inadequate parenting techniques and skills can result in the child becoming poorly behaved. This is represented in the children's picture book, ' Where The Wild Things Are' by Maurice Sendak. While Max battles for authority, his mother demonst rates many parenting techniques, which have led to severe consequences in relation to his poor behaviour. Bad behaviour influences a child's long-term growth as a human being and stunts their journey from child to mature adult. Children develop a sense of acceptable behaviour based on the methods employed by their parents. Negative behaviour comes as a result of the child feeling insecure, becoming aggressive, angry, antisocial, demanding, dependant, undisciplined and also developing a hateful desire to ‘get back at the world.’ These bad behavioural aspects are outcomes reached as the parent has reacted to become over-controlling with orders, reminders of poor behaviour and warnings. With the parent being the unquestioned boss, it is common for the child with an authoritarian in the household to feel irritable, and get angry and temperamental quite quickly. The main idea is to use sliding mode controller to achieve the vibration suppression, impedance-based structural health monitoring technique, and to implement sliding mode observer to prevent any undesirable interaction between the health monitoring system and the control system, when they are implemented together. The usage of smart materials to perform nondestructive assessment of structures is of great interest to civil engineering and other engineering fields, since the integrity of the structure is not compromised. In addition, the modern each day more flexible structures bring to researchers in the field the need to find alternatives in vibration suppression.   Implementing health monitoring together with vibration control is therefore the combination of these two need in a practical and economic manner, in the sense that uses the smart materials and control devices/techniques. Smart materials have the ability of changing their properties when subjected to certain external conditions, such as electric or magnetic fields, for example. In this study the smart material used is in the form of piezoelectric patches. The health monitoring technique used in this research is the impedance-based health monitoring, which is based in changes in the structural impedance. The fundamental idea of this approach is to screen the changes in structural mechanical impedance brought on by damage. An experimental set up was performed in a free-free aluminum bar in order to check the applicability of this method. Sliding mode control is a nonlinear control strategy that adjusts the dynamics of a nonlinear system by forcing the system to slide alongside a surface of the systems regular behavior. One problem this study has to deal with is the health monitoring signal that enters the feedback control loop, since the same PZT patch is used to simultaneously perform health monitoring and to sense the control system in the feedback control loop. In order to try to solve this issue, a sliding mode observer is designed. In order to evaluate the feasibility of the method proposed, both experimental and numerical studies were performed to a single cantilever beam. The controller and observer were designed based on the four lower vibration modes of the beam. The experimental set-up performed to assess the impedance-based health monitoring technique showed that a great change in impedance happens in the region where damage occurs. The experimental and numerical results showed the sliding mode observer was capable of filter the high frequency content that comes from the health monitoring, and the sliding mode control was able to suppress successfully the excessive vibration even after disturbances were introduced. The results from both numerical study and experimental set-up show that this integrated approach can provide significant vibration suppression, while simultaneously detecting damage. The research is important in the sense that brings together the concepts of health monitoring and structural control, and confirms the feasibility of this using sliding mode control/observer and impedance-based health monitoring. However, the study has that are some weaknesses, for example, not much detail is providing regarding the health monitoring of the experimental set-up of the cantilever beam, only vibration suppression results. In general, myth is a narrative that describes and portrays in symbolic language the origin of the basic elements and assumptions of a culture. Mythic narrative relates, for example, how the world began, how humans and animals were created, and how certain customs, gestures, or forms of human activities originated. Almost all cultures possess or at one time possessed and lived in terms of myths. Myths differ from fairy tales in that they refer to a time that is different from ordinary. The time sequence of myth is extraordinary- an â€Å"other† time – the time before the conventional world came into being. Because myths refer to an extraordinary time and place and to gods and other supernatural beings and processes, they have usually been seen as aspects of religion. Because of the inclusive nature of myth, however, it can illustrate many aspects of individual and cultural life. Meaning and interpretationFrom the beginnings of Western culture, myth has presented a problem of meaning and interpretation, and a history of controversy has gathered about both the value and the status of mythology.
